GeometryFactory offers the CGAL software components under various licenses which correspond to different needs: industrial development, industrial and academic research. All commercial licenses are governed by the General Business Terms and Conditions.
Industrial Development License
This is the license for industrial users who integrate our software components in applications that they commercialize or that they use internally, for example in a production chain. The price of a component is independent from the numbers of developers in the same company using it. It is a one shot fee, that is there are no royalties to pay when you distribute your software with our components inside.
Industrial Research License
This is the license for industrial users who cannot immediately amortize software license costs because they work in a research division of a company. The license releases you from the obligation to make your source code publicly available, that is it helps you to protect your intellectual property. The license does not allow the commercialization of the developed software. We charge an annual fee of 5,000 € per research division of a company for this license and it gives access to our complete component repository.
Academic Research License
This is the license for academic users who want the right to not make their code based on CGAL available to the public. It releases you from the obligation to make your source code publicly available and helps you to protect your intellectual property. The license does not allow the commercialization of the developed software. We charge an annual fee of 1000 € per research group for this license and it gives access to our complete component repository.
Open Source Licenses – LGPL/GPL
These are the Open Source licenses used for the different components of the CGAL library. The foundation layer of CGAL is available under the LGPL. This is an Open Source license that allows to integrate CGAL components in applications used internally in production process or sell. The integration has no implication on the license chosen for the end-user application. However, any modifications to a CGAL component must be made available. All other components are based on the foundation layer and they are available under the GPL. When you integrate a CGAL component in an application that you distribute, you must also distribute the source code of your software under the GPL.
